Buying a Racehorse

Getting involved in racehorse ownership can feel like a complicated business. Below we have outlined the three main forms of ownership entry, all of which are available at Manor House Stables. We hope you find something that suits your needs.

Sole Ownership

The horse is yours and only yours but that means any costs will be incurred by you alone, however, we are able to control your costs with an all-inclusive rate, which works out approximately at £2,000 per month plus recoverable VAT. On the flip-side, all prize money comes to you and all profits arising from a sale of the horse would be yours (and exempt from capital gains tax!). Here are some examples of horses that Tom has trained and sold on for a sizeable profit;

With Tom you will also have close involvement with decisions affecting the horse. As a sole owner you will of course be able to choose the name of your horse and which colours will be worn in your name.

Co-ownership

Of course if you don’t want to incur all the costs you can share a horse with other people. We can either introduce you to other owners or perhaps you will want to get some friends involved as well.

As an example, a typical all-inclusive annual cost for a 1/10th share in a £30,000 yearling would be approximately £5,500 plus recoverable VAT. This example is for someone paying all-inclusive training fees in advance. You can of course choose to pay the training fees on a monthly basis.

Co-ownership is effectively any type of racehorse ownership other than sole ownership, but in racing there are a number of different terms for this depending how many people are included in the ownership of the horse. There are 4 types of co-ownership;

Company Ownership

Joint ownership

Racing Partnership

Leasing

Racing Clubs

Racing Clubs are not an independent form of co-ownership. Therefore by joining or becoming a member of a Racing Club you receive the benefits of that Club but are not entering into racehorse ownership yourself. We have a number of clubs you can join including the Manor House Racing Club, which costs just £100 to join and a £40 monthly subscription.

The above are general conditions of entering a Racing Club. For specific details on our in-house Racing Club, the Manor House Racing Club, please click here.

Sales Venues

Horses can generally either be purchased as foals, as yearlings, as 2yos from breeze-up sales, or as older horses from horses in training sales. At Manor House Stables we buy the vast majority of our horses as yearlings, and occasionally from breeze-up sales in the Spring. Below is a brief description of what is on offer from each major sale that Tom will attend.

Arqana

Arqana is France's premier sale, held in Deauville on the North cost. Two sales are held here, one in August and the other in October.

Doncaster Bloodstock Sales

Commonly referred to as DBS, the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales are split into two sales. The premier sale is the DBS Yearling Sale held at the end of August. The other sale, the DBS St Leger Festival Sale is held at the beginning of September.

Keeneland

The Keeneland Yearling Sale held in September is the world's largest yearling sale and is held in Lexington, Kentucky.

Tattersalls Ireland

Tattersalls Ireland is one of Ireland's leading yearling sales and is held in mid-September.

Goffs Orby Sale

The Goffs Orby Sale is another of Ireland's leading yearling sales and is held at the end of September.

Tattersalls UK

Tattersalls is the largest sale in the UK and as such is split into three 'Books' over 10 days. Book 1 is the premier sale and usually runs during the first week of October. Books 2 and 3 run usually run back to back during the second week of October.

Breeze-Ups

The breeze-ups are held in the Spring at various racecourses such as Kempton, Newmarket and Saint-Cloud. This is a chance to buy horses that have already grown into 2yos over the winter and are virtually ready to race.
